Should we stop rescuing healthy wild animals?
I've been volunteering at an urban wildlife rescue for two years, and almost every week we get a call about a squirrel or raccoon that someone 'saved' from their backyard. It sounds compassionate, but these animals often end up stressed, malnourished, or too habituated to humans to survive on their own. The reality is that most healthy wildlife don't need our intervention—they just need us to leave them alone. So, should we really be feeding or rescuing wild animals we encounter, or is our instinct to help actually doing more harm than good? I lean towards non-intervention unless there's a clear injury or immediate threat, but I'm genuinely torn when I see a tiny orphaned fawn or a bird that's fallen from its nest. What's your experience with animal rescue efforts, and where do you draw the line between helping and interfering?
