Is Deep Work Overrated in a Fragmented Workday?
I've been tracking my own productivity for six months now, and I'm starting to doubt the whole concept of 'deep work' as the ultimate goal. Sure, I can focus intensely for two hours on a complex task, but the rest of my day feels fragmented with meetings and admin—so does that deep work really matter if it's only 20% of my time? I've read Cal Newport's advice, but my reality is that most jobs have too many interruptions to structure an entire day around prolonged focus. Could it be that we're overvaluing deep work and undervaluing the ability to handle shallow tasks efficiently, especially when my best ideas often come during those short breaks between tasks? Or am I just making excuses for my scattered attention span?
