I've been shooting with a DSLR for seven years, but I rented a mirrorless camera last weekend and the difference was startling. The autofocus locked onto a moving bird instantly, and the body felt lighter in my hand. Still, I'm not convinced that gear upgrades matter more than composition and timing—some of my best shots came from a cheap kit lens.
