I've been shooting street photography for about seven years now, and I keep coming back to a question that bothers me: does gear actually make you better, or is that just something manufacturers want us to believe? I've seen incredible shots taken with a basic 50mm lens on a cheap body, and yet I still catch myself lusting after the latest mirrorless camera with all its megapixels and autofocus tricks. A friend of mine switched to a medium format setup and his photos changed, sure, but mostly because he started slowing down and thinking more, not because the sensor was bigger. So what do you think — if you had to pick between spending a few thousand dollars on new gear or the same money on a workshop and travel, which would push your photography further?
