Should chemistry education focus less on memorization and more on practical applications?
I've been revisiting high school chemistry lately, and I keep wondering if our obsession with memorizing the periodic table and balancing equations actually helps anyone understand the world. My neighbor works as a lab technician and jokes that he only remembers about ten elements by heart. Should the way we teach chemistry shift from rote learning to more practical, project-based approaches that connect to everyday life, like analyzing food additives or water quality? Or is the traditional foundation still necessary before we can think critically about reactions?
