Does Social Media Cause More Harm Than Good?
I've been researching whether social media actually causes more harm than good, and the data is surprisingly mixed. A study from MIT found false news spreads six times faster than truth, yet the same platforms helped organize real-world protests and disaster relief. My own feed is half useful information, half outrage bait. When I track my mood after scrolling, I feel worse—but I also learn about local events and keep in touch with friends I'd otherwise lose. So is the cure for social media's problems simply using it less, or do we need systemic changes like algorithm transparency and better moderation? I lean toward the latter because personal discipline never scaled to millions of users. But maybe I'm overestimating the power of regulation in a global, decentralized space.
