I've been reading about free will and neuroscience, and experiments like Libet's showing brain activity before conscious decision make me wonder if we're just rationalizing after the fact. If our choices are determined by prior causes, can we really hold anyone morally responsible? But then again, what would it even mean to live as if we have no free will—would we stop punishing criminals or just treat them like broken machines? I lean toward a compatibilist view, but the more I think about it, the less certain I am that our intuitions match the physics.
