Do we really change our beliefs when faced with contradicting evidence?
I've been reading about cognitive dissonance lately and wondering how often we actually change our beliefs when faced with contradicting evidence. A friend of mine still smokes despite knowing the health risks, and he always finds a way to rationalize it. Do we really update our views based on new information, or do we just get better at defending our old ones? I'm curious if anyone here has genuinely shifted their stance on something major after a long-held belief was challenged.
