Do we blame ourselves too much for social awkwardness?
I've been noticing how often we blame ourselves for social mishaps — replaying conversations and assuming everyone noticed our awkward pause. But psychological studies show the 'spotlight effect' is real: people consistently overestimate how much others observe them. So when I ask if we're too hard on ourselves after awkward moments, I lean toward YES, because most of our social anxiety is based on an illusion. That said, some self-reflection is healthy, but the line between learning from mistakes and punishing ourselves seems blurry to me. Shouldn't we trust that others are more forgiving than our inner critic suggests?
