I've been mentoring junior developers for two years now, and one pattern keeps showing up: they hit a bug, burn hours guessing, then finally ask for help and we solve it in ten minutes. Is debugging really a skill you can teach, or is it mostly pattern recognition that only comes from experience? I'm starting to think our whole approach to onboarding is backwards—maybe we should just drop them into legacy code and let them struggle more, with tighter feedback loops. But then again, that's basically what apprenticeships did for centuries, and we moved away from those for a reason, didn't we?
