Is buying still better than renting for middle-class families?
I've been looking into housing costs in my mid-sized city, and the gap between buying and renting has narrowed so much that I'm genuinely unsure which path makes more sense for a typical middle-class family right now. A friend just bought a starter home at 6.8% interest, another rents a similar place for about 70% of the monthly mortgage payment — but the renter's landlord just raised rent 8% this year. Property taxes and maintenance keep climbing too, so I wonder if the old rule about buying always being better still holds, or if flexibility and lower upfront costs make renting the smarter bet for the next decade. What factors have you seen tip the balance one way or the other recently?
