Is structured online learning as effective as immersion for fluency?
I've been learning Mandarin for two years, and the hardest part isn't the tones or characters—it's the sheer number of homophones and contextual meanings. My tutor from Beijing insists that immersion is the only real way to get fluent, but I've made more progress through daily 15-minute app sessions than in my week-long trip to Taipei. Is structured online learning actually just as effective as living in a Chinese-speaking country for reaching conversational fluency? I'm starting to doubt the old assumption that you must move abroad to truly master the language, especially with tools like HelloChinese and iTalki offering native speakers on demand.
