I've been investing in individual stocks for five years, and after a string of wins and losses, I'm starting to wonder if passive index funds are the only rational choice for most people. Even professional fund managers often underperform the S&P 500 over the long term, so what chance do we amateurs have? But then again, picking stocks has taught me more about how markets work than any book ever could. Is that education worth the cost of potentially lower returns?
