Should soft skills outweigh technical expertise when hiring?
I've been interviewing candidates for a senior role, and the shortlist came down to two people: one with a flawless technical resume and another whose code is decent but who's known for mentoring juniors and calming tense standups. We hired the second one, and honestly, it's made me question whether we over-index on hard skills in most job postings. Soft skills like listening, adaptability, and giving feedback without ego—they're not just nice-to-haves; they often determine whether a project ships or stalls. But I also know some engineers who are brilliant coders but terrible communicators, and they still deliver critical solo work. So, when you're building a team, should soft skills actually outweigh technical expertise in hiring, or are we just saying that because they're easier to spot in an interview?
