Does forgiving truly help the victim, or can healing occur without it?
I've been in therapy for three years now, and my therapist recently suggested that 'forgiveness' isn't about the other person—it's about releasing my own anger. But I'm not convinced. Forgiving someone who betrayed my trust feels like letting them off the hook, especially when they've never apologized or shown remorse. Does forgiving actually help the victim, or does it just make us feel pressured to suppress valid resentment? I'm genuinely torn because I've seen friends who forgave and felt lighter, but I've also seen others who used 'forgiveness' as a way to avoid confronting real issues. Can you truly heal without forgiving, or is forgiveness the only real path to moving on?
