I've been following the debate over LGBTQ+ inclusive education in schools, and it strikes me as one of those topics where people talk past each other because they're really arguing about different things. Should schools teach about sexual orientation and gender identity as part of the standard curriculum, even at the risk of upsetting some parents? I grew up in a conservative town where anything outside heteronormative was hidden, and I can't help but wonder if greater visibility early on would have saved many of my friends years of confusion and shame. But then again, parents might feel their role is being usurped by the state when it comes to values around sex and family. What do you all think—is there a line between teaching tolerance and pushing a certain agenda?
