I've been doing fieldwork in a small fishing community in Vietnam where they have elaborate rituals to honor the sea goddess. Tourists see it as charming folklore, but for locals it's a serious practice tied to safety and livelihood. How do anthropologists balance respecting local beliefs with the need to explain them scientifically? Can we truly understand a ritual without participating, and if we participate, have we already altered it?
