Is zoning the main barrier to affordable housing in Seattle?
I've been apartment hunting in Seattle for two months, and the rent for a 500-square-foot studio has jumped from $1,400 to $1,800 in just three years. Local politicians keep saying they're tackling the housing crisis, but I've seen more luxury towers than affordable units. Does anyone else think that zoning laws and NIMBY resistance are actually the main blockers, not just market forces? I'm not an expert, but it feels like we'll never get costs down without forcing cities to build denser near transit hubs.
