Has streaming improved TV storytelling or ruined it?
I've been a TV writer for six years, and the shift toward streaming has completely changed how we structure episodes. When I started, we had to hook viewers within the first couple of minutes and resolve storylines by the end of the hour; now, we're encouraged to leave cliffhangers every few scenes to keep people bingeing. But is this actually making television better, or are we just sacrificing coherent storytelling for addictive pacing? Are we losing the art of the standalone episode that used to define great TV?
