Does binge-release ruin TV's cultural impact?
I've been a TV director for 15 years, and I'm starting to think that binge-release seasons are making shows worse. When Netflix drops all episodes at once, creators lose the weekly conversation that builds anticipation and lets ideas settle between episodes. My colleagues argue that binging is what viewers want and that traditional scheduling is outdated, but I've seen how appointment viewing created cultural moments that streaming marathons rarely replicate. The production quality hasn't dropped, but the cultural impact of shows like Game of Thrones versus most modern Netflix hits seems undeniable to me. Is sacrificing weekly releases truly necessary for the streaming model, or are we just giving up on shared viewing experiences?
