I've been a public school teacher for nine years, and I keep returning to this question: are standardized tests forcing teachers to teach to the test and dumbing down real learning? I've seen colleagues cut out project-based lessons to drill multiple-choice practice, and kids get better at Bubble sheets but not at thinking. The tricky part is that tests do show us where gaps are, but they rarely measure curiosity or creativity. So, with the pressure on, does the benefit of accountability outweigh the loss of intrinsic motivation and deep understanding?
