Should parents enforce rigid bedtimes or allow flexible sleep?
I've been a parent for eight years, and I still can't decide if strict bedtimes are necessary or just a control thing. We tried the flexible approach for a month, letting our 6-year-old decide when to sleep, and he naturally settled into a 10 PM routine rather than the usual 8 PM. He seemed happier and more rested, but our mornings became a chaotic scramble to get to school on time. I've read studies linking inconsistent sleep to behavioral issues, but they often focus on extremes, not moderate flexibility. Should parents enforce rigid schedules, or is it okay to let kids regulate their own sleep when they're not causing problems?
