Are Pediatric Antibiotic Prescriptions Doing More Harm Than Good?
I've been a nurse for nine years, and I'm starting to wonder if we're over-medicalizing normal childhood experiences. My own son had a mild fever last week, and the pediatrician pushed antibiotics even though it was likely viral. We hand out prescriptions for everything from tantrums to picky eating, and I think we're creating a generation that expects a pill for every discomfort. But when I voice this to colleagues, they argue that early intervention saves lives and that we shouldn't play roulette with a child's health. So, is the rising rate of pediatric antibiotic prescriptions doing more harm than good?
