I teach high school math, and every year I see students who can factor quadratics flawlessly but panic when a word problem asks them to decide which operation to use. We drill procedures for standardized tests, yet those same tests now allow graphing calculators that do half the algebra for them. If the goal is to prepare students for a world where AI can compute anything, shouldn't we spend more time on problem formulation and estimation instead of hand-solving equations?
