I spent last weekend at a street art festival, and the contrast between the pieces in the designated zone and the illegal tags nearby got me thinking. When we call something art, we usually mean it's authorized, but some of the most raw and honest works I've seen were done without permission. I've heard property owners argue that unsanctioned art is just vandalism, and they have a point about respecting private space. Yet I've also seen how a mural on a boarded-up building can change the whole mood of a block. So, is art only legitimate when it's commissioned, or can street art stand on its own as art even where it's not invited?
