Should we replace food drives with cash donations?
I organized a neighborhood food drive last winter and we ended up with mostly canned goods nobody really wanted, like expired pumpkin puree and weird jellies. It made me wonder if our community would be better served by giving cash directly to local food banks instead of collecting physical items. Cash lets organizations buy exactly what they need in bulk, but I know people feel more connected when they donate tangible goods. Donating money feels less personal, yet it might actually do more good with less waste. What do you think—should we stop doing food drives and just ask for cash donations instead?
