Should younger workers plan for reduced Social Security benefits?
I'm 45 and have been paying into Social Security since I was 22, but the trust fund is projected to run dry around 2034. I've read that we could still pay out about 80% of benefits from payroll taxes alone, but that's a big cut for people like my parents who depend on it. Do you think younger workers like me should just plan around reduced benefits, or is there still a realistic path to fix the system? I've heard suggestions from raising the payroll tax cap to means-testing, but they all seem politically painful.
