I have played piano for 12 years and guitar for 5, but I never got formal training in music theory until college. What I noticed is that my improvisation actually got worse after I learned all the rules, because I started overthinking every note. Some of my best riffs came from pure ignorance of what 'should' follow what. Do you really need to know music theory to create great music, or does it just box you in?
