History textbooks often present a single, heroic narrative of national events, but my own research into local archives shows how many contradictions get smoothed over. When we teach history as settled fact, we risk turning students into passive memorizers rather than critical thinkers. Shouldn't we treat history as an ongoing debate between competing evidence and perspectives, rather than a fixed story to be accepted?
