Gated communities are often seen as safe havens, but I've noticed they fragment cities into islands of privilege. In my metro area, these developments have walls that literally cut off public streets, making commutes longer for everyone else. Yes, crime rates inside are lower, but that's partly because they exclude the problems they help create outside. Should we really be designing neighborhoods that reinforce segregation under the guise of safety?
