Free will is an illusion we cling to because the alternative feels unbearable. I've read about Libet's experiments showing brain activity precedes conscious decision by milliseconds, and while that doesn't settle everything, it makes me wonder how much of our choices are just post-hoc stories we tell ourselves. Neuroscience keeps finding correlations between neural states and decisions, but we still punish people as if they could have done otherwise. If we truly had free will, wouldn't we see more unpredictability in human behavior than we actually do?
