Electric cars are often praised as the clean solution to urban pollution, but I'm starting to wonder if they just shift the problem rather than solving it. Battery production requires lithium and cobalt mining that devastates ecosystems and communities, and charging from a coal-heavy grid still emits plenty of CO2. Even with these issues, though, the total lifecycle emissions are typically lower than gasoline cars, so where do we draw the line on what counts as 'green'?
