E-commerce giants like Amazon have made shopping incredibly convenient, but I wonder if we've traded away too much in return. Local bookstores and boutiques are closing at an alarming rate—since 2010, the U.S. has lost nearly half of its independent retailers. Is the efficiency of online marketplaces worth the hollowing out of our main streets and the loss of personal service? I'm not convinced that the convenience justifies the cost to community character and small business diversity.
