I've migrated the same 200k-line codebase from SVN to Git to Mercurial and back to Git over 12 years, and I'd still pick a boring version control system over a clever one every time. Git won because of GitHub and network effects, not because its UI makes sense — I've watched a senior engineer lose a day to a detached HEAD, and I've done it myself. But Mercurial had clearer mental models and better Windows support, and it still lost. So: does the best software actually win, or just the one with the most momentum?
