Does Reality TV Undermine Our Empathy for Real People?
Reality TV has exploded over the last two decades, with hundreds of shows airing globally, but I'm starting to think it's actually hurting our ability to empathize with real people. Producers edit for conflict, and viewers reward drama, so contestants become caricatures rather than humans. When we watch someone cry after elimination, are we feeling for them or just enjoying the show? The genre makes money, sure, but at what cost to our social instincts?
