After two years of teaching community college online, I'm convinced that online learning fails students who need the most support—first-gen, low-income, and those with learning differences. My data shows my online students' pass rate dropped 15% compared to pre-pandemic in-person, despite the same lectures and assignments. Sure, some thrive with flexibility, but they're the exception. We can't pretend recorded lectures and discussion boards replace the immediacy of a classroom where I can see confusion on a face. Should we be pushing so hard to make online learning permanent when it deepens the equity gap?
