Advancements in high-resolution LIDAR, photogrammetry, and ground-penetrating radar now allow archaeologists to record subsurface ruins without disturbing a single trowel of earth. Proponents argue that non-invasive surveying preserves fragile stratigraphy for future generations with superior technology, preventing irreversible site degradation. However, field researchers emphasize that chemical soil analyses, organic dating, and physical micro-artifacts cannot be recovered from satellite passes and digital scans alone. The central debate is whether digital mapping can ever substitute for physical excavation, or if leaving sites unexamined simply defers discoveries that natural erosion may destroy first.
