Does classic literature still matter to young readers today, or has it become an academic requirement rather than a source of genuine connection? I teach high school English, and when we read Dickens or Austen, many students see the words as barriers—old language, slow plots, unfamiliar customs. Yet those same students binge-watch adaptations and discuss the characters with real passion on social media. Maybe the core stories remain relevant, but the original texts feel like a foreign language to a generation raised on immediacy. Is the struggle with archaic prose worth the payoff, or should we be teaching contemporary authors who speak their emotional language directly?
