Charging customers for return shipping is the fastest way for an e-commerce store to lose repeat buyers, even if it saves money upfront. I run a small online shop selling handmade ceramics, and when I switched to free returns last year, my return rate actually dropped from 8% to 5% because people stopped ordering three sizes just to keep one. My shipping costs went up about $400 a month, but repeat purchases climbed 22%, which more than covered the difference. Maybe this only works for stores with higher margins like mine, and I'd genuinely like to hear from sellers in low-margin categories who tried the same thing.
