Is calculus necessary for all STEM degrees?
Do we actually use calculus in real life, or is it just a filter for STEM majors? I've been a civil engineer for 12 years, and I can count on one hand the times I solved a differential equation on the job. Sure, the theory underpins the software I use daily, but that feels different from the manual integration I sweated through in college. Yet my sister, who teaches high school math, argues that calculus develops problem-solving skills that transcend the specific formulas. I'm torn because I want my kids to be critical thinkers, but I also see classmates who dropped out of engineering purely due to calculus. Maybe the real question is whether forcing every would-be programmer or biologist through three semesters of analysis is the best use of their time. The counterpoint is that you never know which conceptual foundation you'll need later, especially in fields like machine learning or epidemiology. So, should calculus remain a mandatory gatekeeper for all technical degrees, or is it time to rethink its universality?
