Did flat design sacrifice usability for minimalism?
Flat design has taken over every app and website, but I'm starting to question if we lost something important when we ditched skeuomorphism. The 3D buttons and realistic textures from a decade ago weren't just decorative; they gave users clear affordances about what was clickable. Now I see people my own age hovering over a text link that looks like plain body copy, unsure whether it's interactive. My grandmother definitely struggles more with modern interfaces than she did with the old iOS calendar that looked like a physical binder. Maybe minimalism looks clean in screenshots, but at what cost to usability for non-tech-savvy folks? I'd trade some visual elegance for clearer cues about how to navigate a page.
