Classic novels still dominate high school reading lists, but I'm not sure that tradition serves today's students well. When I teach "The Great Gatsby" to teenagers who scroll through TikTok, the cultural gaps feel enormous — they struggle with the Prohibition-era slang and the slow-burn symbolism. Maybe we'd build better lifelong readers by swapping in contemporary literature that speaks to their actual lives, even if it lacks that canonical status.
