Classic novels are still required reading in most high school English classes, but I wonder if that's the best use of students' time. I loved The Great Gatsby in 11th grade, yet my own teenager struggles with the same book and finds it irrelevant to his life. Maybe the literary canon should evolve to include more contemporary diverse authors instead of clinging to dead white men.
