Airlines keep touting sustainable aviation fuel as the fix for their carbon problem, but SAF still accounts for less than 0.1% of global jet fuel use. Even if we scaled production tenfold, the feedstock supply—used cooking oil, agricultural waste—wouldn't come close to covering current flight volumes. I fly twice a month for work and my per-trip emissions are roughly equivalent to a month of driving, which makes me wonder if the real answer is fewer flights, not greener ones. Should airlines be pushing efficiency gains and route optimization harder instead of banking on a fuel that barely exists yet?
