Airlines keep raising baggage fees, and budget carriers now charge for everything from seat selection to a bottle of water. I flew Spirit last month and paid $34 for a carry-on that fit under the seat, which made the ticket more expensive than a mainline airline with better service. At what point do these fees become deceptive pricing rather than a fair way to unbundle costs? If a passenger can't avoid the fee without sacrificing basic needs, the advertised fare is meaningless. I think airlines should be required to include one carry-on in the base price, or regulators should force full-price transparency at the search stage.
