Does competitive sports build character or just reveal it?
After watching my son's youth soccer team play this weekend, I keep asking whether competitive sports actually build character or just reveal it. The coach benched the shy kid who's been practicing every day, while the naturally talented player who never shows up to practice started again. We tell kids that sports teach hard work and resilience, but the systems we build seem to reward raw talent over effort. Is the real lesson we're sending that genetics beat dedication, or am I just overthinking a Saturday morning game?
