Does 'adopt don't shop' oversimplify pet choices?
Adopting a shelter pet instead of buying from a breeder is often seen as the morally superior choice, but I'm not so sure it always is. I've volunteered at shelters for two years, and while many dogs thrive, others come with severe trauma that requires experienced owners—something first-timers rarely are. Breeders who health-test and prioritize temperament can produce predictably stable companions, which ultimately reduces returns and rehoming. Doesn't that mean the 'adopt don't shop' mantra oversimplifies a complex decision where both routes have ethical trade-offs?
