Abstract expressionism gets all the hype, but I think realism is the real test of an artist's skill. I spent last weekend at the Met and found myself staring at a Vermeer for twenty minutes, wondering how anyone captures light like that with paint. The emotion in a perfectly rendered face hits me harder than any splash of color on canvas.
